The Arc of Katy is pleased to announce Fred Shafer as president of the Board of Directors.  Shafer brings to the Board 40 years of experience in working with individuals with disabilities. Over his career, he has served as the Coordinator for Special Education for Region 3 Education Service Center in Victoria, Executive Director for Special Education, Counseling and Psychological Services for the Katy ISD, Director of Special Education for Region 4 Education Service Center in Houston and Executive Director for Special Education for the Beaumont Independent School District.

Recently retired from his career in education Shafer and his wife, Patti, also a retired Katy ISD administrator with 37 years in education, continue to be involved in Katy ISD and the community.  Much of their time volunteering in Katy ISD is spent at Fred and Patti Shafer Elementary, an honor they received by the school district in 2012 when the campus opened.  The Shafers are also actively involved in Kingsland Baptist Church, where Fred serves as a deacon and coordinates the Deacon Special Needs Outreach Ministry.

The Arc of Katy is a non-profit organization that serves primarily adult individuals with intellectual and developmental delays. During the year the organization provides a Day Camp on Monday through Thursday for individuals who are no longer enrolled in public school.  The Day Camp provides participants the opportunity to engage in arts and crafts, field trips in and outside the Katy area, recreational activities and community events.  A summer camp is also provided for participants ages 16 years and older in addition to monthly social activities.
