October Programs at Cinco Ranch Branch Library

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd. in Katy, presents a variety of free children’s programs, adult computer classes, book clubs and special programs for people of all ages.  All programs are free and open to the public. • Sew with Sophie: Hand-Sewing for the Holidays

October 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th at 7 to 8 pm. In this four-part, hands-on workshop, different skills and holiday projects will be introduced each week. Sewing instructor Sophie Adobo will provide basic instruction on sewing techniques, including hand-sewing, machine-sewing, pinning, reading a traditional pattern, taking measurements and more. Materials will be provided. Samples of the library’s instructional books, crafting magazines and website resources will be available. This workshop is intended for adults and young adults aged 14 and above. Reservations required.

• Chess Day at the Library

October 6th and 20th at 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. People of all ages and skill levels who are interested in playing chess are invited to practice their strategies while playing against others in a relaxed, stress-free environment. Experienced players will be on hand to provide tips and assistance. A limited number of chess sets will be provided. Players are welcome to bring their own sets.

• Craft Club at Cinco Ranch

October 9th and 23rd, 10 am to noon. People of all experience levels who enjoy any type of crafting are invited to attend this new monthly drop-in event to get other crafters’ perspectives, critiques and suggestions. Chat and network with other crafters who enjoy everything from art and needlework to woodwork and more! Those attending should bring their projects and their own crafting supplies. Samples of the library’s instructional books, magazines, and websites on various crafts will be available. The group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month.

• Learning Express Library Demonstration

October 15th at noon to 1 pm. Learn how to use the resource’s software tutorials to improve computer skills and learn different types of software programs, such as MS Word, MS Excel and more. Hear how this resource can be used to explore career options, search for jobs, improve interviewing skills and more. Reservations required.

• Kicking the Sugar Habit

October 20th at 10:30 am. Certified health and life coach Valerie Coyle will explain the effects of sugar on one’s body and why it can be challenging to eliminate sugar in one’s diet. Learn about high-fructose corn-syrup, food that spikes one’s blood sugar and creates a blood-sugar roller-coaster. Get tips on how to adopt a healthier diet.
