Meet Caitlyn Cano

Caitlyn Cano

By Joan Frances –

St. John XXIII Class of 2019 has accomplished four years of spiritual guidance, intense academics, educational extracurricular activities and engaging sports. One senior who has achieved success and recognition in everything her school has offered is Caitlyn Cano.

Cano has taken Advanced Placement, College Preparatory and Honors classes throughout her high school career. She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She is a House Captain for Student Government and a member of the Art Club and Science Bowl. She has received numerous Academic Achievement A-wards including AP Scholar with Distinction, Distinguished Award for Science and Social Studies and National Merit Commended Scholar Award.

Cano’s favorite teacher is Dr. Roland Millare. “He has been very influential to both my academic career and my personal growth. In class, he challenges me to question more and research further into the things I’m passionate about. He taught me Theology for my junior and senior year, but the most important lessons I’ve learned came from his example as a leader. As the Aquinas House Master, he has helped me develop my leadership abilities and encouraged me to live out my faith in everything I do.”

One value Cano lives by is positi-vity. “I try to find joy in everything, even the difficult things. Whether it’s a tough test that I can push myself to study hard for or a neighborhood cat that brings me an unexpected smile, small joys are the fuel for everything I do. Since I find my source in joy, I can have a positive outlook on life despite the hard moments.”

In addition to her extensive commitment to academics, Cano is a member of the St. John XXII School Choir, the Cornerstone Youth Band and St. Edith Stein Liturgical Choir. She received the President’s Award for Music and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) All-State Honor for Vocal Solo and Vocal Quartet. She is also the Captain for the 2019 season of the Varsity Cross Country team and a member of the Varsity Track team.

Cano’s leadership skills are admirable. “In my leadership roles, I’ve gotten to know so many people I never would’ve expected to be friends with, and we get to build each other up in the passions we share. My choir girls and I work on our music together after school, I push my teammates to run their best workouts every day at cross country and I encourage my peers in their spiritual journeys through faith leadership. I will always treasure the possibilities St. John has presented to me. I was given the opportunity to pursue everything I was interested in trying, even if I’d never done it before. At St. John, I could be an athlete, a musician and a good student. Over these four years, I have practiced my gifts and talents and discovered the career path I’m going to follow.”

Cano has been an active participant with the Prayer Team, Grade Level Retreat Leader, and Kairos Leadership Team, where they prepare for overnight retreats. She is the founding member and officer of Rise Bible Study that meets every Friday morning. Students engage in group discussions to break open scripture and look at how to apply it in their own lives.

In the fall, Cano will be attending the University of Notre Dame to major in Chemical Engineering and minor in Musical Theater. Congratulations Caitlyn Cano for your commitment, devotion to your faith and leadership skills. Good luck as you take the next step to a successful future.
